All who are lowly

Day 7 – Summary

As we conclude this week, looking at the lowly, we’ll go back to the beginning, to the conception. I suggest that Mary and Joseph are the first and best example of lives lived beautifully lowly.

Their social and economic status.

Their humility and willingness to submit to One greater for direction.

Their faith and faithfulness even when God didn’t seem to make sense.

Their apparent willingness to take a back seat to their son and his life.

Almighty God, the One whose name is “Holy”, chose to dwell, literally, in and with them!

Father, you still choose to make your home in the lowly. So, may I, may we choose to be in that place, more and more, day by day, little by little, and would you make yourself at home within us.

Enjoy the lyrics to this song by friends Don and Lori Chaffer from the musical, The Unusual Tale of Mary and Joseph’s Baby.

Whose Baby is He? (as sung by Mary)

Maybe he wanted the mother of his son to be angry

Maybe he wanted the mother of his son to be poor

Maybe he wanted the mother of his son to trip up everyone

and make it easier to come undone

Maybe he needed all of them to wonder

 Whose baby is he?

Maybe he wanted to make me an open door

so no one would think that they weren’t worthy anymore

So everyone could see someone as lowly as me

 Call him my baby.

Maybe he wanted the father of his son to be on the outside

Maybe he wanted the father of his son to be unsure

Maybe he wanted the father of his son in front of everyone

to have his reputation come undone

Maybe he needed everyone to see

that sometimes you give up your honor for the sake of mercy

Maybe he chose you like he chose me

not for your power but for your humility

So everyone could see someone as lowly as you

 call him their baby, too.

He wants everyone to call His son their baby.
