All who are questioning

Day 3 – Stewardship

“And when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”) and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord, ‘a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.’”

Luke 2: 22-24

It wasn’t what he planned, but it was the role he was given. To be the earthly father of the Messiah. Was it bittersweet for him? Did he envision this moment with “his” and Mary’s child? He honored the Law and did as was commanded, but I think, as a father myself, there was a bit of sadness in the midst of this joy.

I think that Joseph didn’t just sacrifice his dream once, but actually multiple times throughout his life. In the moments that probably every Jewish father dreamed of celebrating, there was sorrow and joy; yet he was faithful, not just going through the motions —his heart was in it as well.

I think we often think that blessings aren’t mixed with sadness, but I think it is far more realistic that true faith is stewarding God’s blessing in the midst of sadness and trusting that His way is better.

Inward: Immanuel, what do you want me to know? What are some things that you are calling me to surrender to you continually? Do I get frustrated when I am faced with a heartache or situation once again?

Outward: Immanuel, what do you want me to do? Show me how I can be both sensitive and encouraging to someone who has made sacrifices for you to work.
