All who are willing

Day 3 – Peter

Matthew 14:28Lord, if it is you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” “Come,” he said.

If there is a Hall of Fame of Willing, Peter has to be an inductee. As we looked at last week, it seems like his modus operandi seemed to be Ready, Fire, Aim.

And here he is again. They are still high from feeding the 5000, in a boat, in a storm, over 3 miles from shore, and they see what looks like Jesus…walking on the water! Impossible, right?

You have to appreciate Peter’s wild willingness. What is it that compels this? A mix of love, enthusiasm, and ego?

And here, Peter initiates the calling. That is usually Jesus’s role, right? But here, Peter’s leading, and Jesus is happy to go along.

“Come.”

And Peter does! And Peter fails.

I’m pretty sure his life motto was, If you’re going to fail, fail trying.

But don’t miss Jesus’ response. Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him…

INWARD: Father, what do you want me to know?

What part of this story do you resonate with, and what parts freak you out a little?

Reflect on why you think that is.

What do you imagine Jesus’ tone of voice to be when He says to Peter, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”  Is it harsh and scolding? Or is it more compassionate and hopeful?

OUTWARD: Father, what do you want me to do?

Is there something in your life that you think Jesus might be saying “Come” to? A person? An opportunity?

What is one step of willingness that you can take towards that today?
