Advent: Week 2 Day 2

Mighty God: No Other Gods

Isaiah 44:6

Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel

and his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts:

“I am the first and I am the last;

besides me there is no god.”

Deuteronomy 5:6-10 (NIV)

6 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 7 You shall have no other gods before me. 8 You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 9 You shall not bow down to them or serve them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 10 but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments. 11 You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. 12 Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you.

Questions for Reflection:

  1. Other common modern idols Matt Chandler identifies in “Source and Surface Idols” include image, work, achievement, materialism, and relationships. Do you see yourself worshipping any of these idols instead of Mighty God?
  2. How does your worship of the idol(s) you identified impact your life?
  3. Why do you think Mighty God centers the first four of the ten commandments around how we view and honor Him?
  4. In his book Emotionally Healthy Spirituality, Peter Scazzero identifies four steps modern Christians can use to observe the Sabbath: stop, rest, delight, and contemplate. How might stopping and resting from productivity, delighting in the blessings God has given you, and contemplating the love and glory of God help you relate to God more fully as Mighty God?
