Advent: Week 2 Day 3

Mighty God: Lots of Other Gods

Psalm 86:8-10

There is none like you among the gods, O Lord,

nor are there any works like yours.

All the nations you have made shall come

and worship before you, O Lord,

and shall glorify your name.

For you are great and do wondrous things;

you alone are God.

Psalm 96:1-6

Oh sing to the Lord a new song;

sing to the Lord, all the earth!

Sing to the Lord, bless his name;

tell of his salvation from day to day.

Declare his glory among the nations,

his marvelous works among all the peoples!

For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised;

he is to be feared above all gods.

For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols,

but the Lord made the heavens.

Splendor and majesty are before him;

strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.

Psalm 138:1

I will praise you, O Lord, with all my heart;

Before the “gods” I will sing your praise.

Clearly, there are lots of other gods – in every culture and every people group throughout history – and we continue to create more every day.

Questions for Reflection:

  1. John Calvin once described the human heart as an “idol-making factory.” What do you think motivates you to serve idols of your own making instead of the one true Mighty God?
  2. Write a prayer of confession, turning from your own false gods to Mighty God.
