All who are lowly

Day 2 – Among the blue-collars

“And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.  And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people…

And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.”

Luke 2:8-20

Isn’t it curious that the very first people that God chooses to reveal this greatest news ever told to are a group of shepherds?

Shepherds were among the lowest in societal standing, the bluest of blue-collar workers. And God chooses to tell them first.

What might this say about God and his priorities?

What does this say about the “lowly” shepherds and, therefore, about us?

I am drawn to their wonder, curiosity, and joy, to their almost reflexive response to go and tell.

INWARD: Father, what do you want me to know in this story that I don’t already know?

Be curious. Wonder. Rejoice. Read the whole story and note the questions that arise in you.

Note observations you have around their response to the news, and yours. Let your imagination lead.

OUTWARD: Father, what do you want me to do?

As I read and listen, is there an action that comes to mind?

Is there a simple way to go and tell the good news of Jesus to someone you know? A text or note? A call?
