Advent: Week 1 Day 3

Wonderful Counselor: God’s Desire

Proverbs 1: 20-23

Wisdom cries aloud in the street, in the markets she raises her voice at the head of the noisy streets she cries out; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks: “How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge? If you turn at my reproof, behold, I will pour out my spirit to you; I will make my words known to you.”

James 1: 5-6

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.

Questions for Reflection:

  1. What do these passages reveal about God’s desire for us with regards to wisdom?
  2. What does God call us to do in these passages?
  3. What is something that sometimes prevents you from asking God for wisdom?
  4. How does learning to ask for wisdom relate to the process of maturing?

That question 3 is so convicting. I think there are several excuses I could list, but all of them are because I am leaning on my own understanding instead of asking for His. Praying that as I lean into Him and away from my own strength, I will ask freely and faithfully for the wisdom I lack.
